Arthritis exercises: 12 EASY ways to help your joint pain

Joint pain can affect your everyday life, and can make activities like walking, dancing and playing sports uncomfortable.

These 12 exercises could help to alleviate some of the joint pain, Voltarol said.

The exercises require no medication, and work anytime of day.

Set your own pace, follow every step, or just mix and match exercises, it said.

The exercises include hip stretching, knee hugging and a variety of breathing techniques to improve well-being.

Examples of exercise include the knee massage and hip stretch.

For the knee massage, the video - released by Voltarol with GlaxoSmithKline High Performance Lab - recommended sitting your knee slightly bent.

“Massage around your kneecap, moving from top to bottom,” the video said.

“Use a light circular motion as you move away form the knee. Continue for five minutes in short or longer strokes.”

For the hip stretch, lie on a yoga mat or firm mattress.

Bend your right knee up toward your abdomen.

Slowly let your foot swing to one side, and hold it there for a few seconds before bringing it back up to its original position.

Let your foot swing to other side, and repeat the action 10 times for each leg.

In arthritis patients, joints begin to swell and become tender. They could even make a grating sound if bone rubs on bone.

Symptoms vary from person to person, but the condition can make everyday life difficult for some patients.

Almost nine million people in the UK have sought treatment for osteoarthritis - the most common form of arthritis in the country.

More than 400,000 people in the UK suffer with rheumatoid arthritis, according to Arthritis Research UK.
