Warning: Five health problems you should never ignore as you age - including weight loss

Ageing can be an unnerving process for many of us - not being as active as we once were, needing that little extra support from others and regular visits to the GP surgery. 

But to make the most of your golden years and keep the worries of ill health at bay, there are five health problems you should never ignore - be weary of the early signs and symptoms. 

Losing weight 

A common misconception is that it is normal to lose weight as you age. Although a loss of muscle definition and strength can occur with age, if you are steadily losing weight it can be a sign of malnourishment. 

A recent study from Malnutrition Task Force has estimated that 10 per cent of over 65s suffer from malnutrition in the UK, with loneliness or bereavement being the most common factors for a loss of appetite. 

If you are concerned about your nutrition it is important to visit your GP as it could be an early indication of another more serious health problem such a detention or liver disease. 

Poor sleep

According to research published in the American Heart Association’s Journal a lack of sleep among the elderly can lead to an increased link of a stroke and hardened brain arteries.
