Flu kills 271 people in UK - add these FIVE 'superherbs' to your diet to prevent infection

Flu has now killed 271 people in the UK since the beginning of October, latest Public Health England figures have revealed.

Last week, 20 more people died from the influenza virus.

The flu virus is very infectious and is easily spread to other people, the NHS said. You’re most likely to pass it on to other people within the first five days of infection.

But, you could prevent infection from flu by adding these ‘superherbs’ to your diet.

Turmeric, green tea, nasturtium, elderflower and rosehip could all protect against flu, according to nutritionist Rick Hay.

Combining all of the herbs together provided the best protection against the influenza virus, he said.

Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties makes it a good defence against flu.

“Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric,” said Hay.

“It helps to consume black pepper with it, which contains piperine a natural substance that enhances the absorption of curcumin multiple times.”

Green tea has “anti-inflammatory polyphenols, immune boosting catechins, which boost circulation and help prevent cell damage”, said Hay.

Nasturtium is rich in vitamin C, is a natural antibiotics, and has immune-boosting compounds, the nutritionist said.

Elderflower was traditionally used to fight flu, and could help to relieve sinus symptoms and respiratory conditions.

Rosehip is one of the richest natural source of vitamin C. It’s “used to combat respiratory problems and is high in lycopene to help fight viral infections”.

You could also lower your risk of becoming infected by getting the flu jab, the NHS said.

The virus is spread by germs from coughs and sneezes, which can live on hands and surfaces for 24 hours.

Washing your hands regularly could prevent spreading flu.

If you do becoming infected, the best way to treat flu is to get plenty of rest, keep warm and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.
