Heart disease treatment: Beta blockers could be used to cure THIS other deadly condition

Researchers have found a common heart disease medication could also treat a type of lung disease.

A study by the Cleveland Clinic discovered that beta blockers had a positive effect on pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). 

The condition is caused by high blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries - which carry deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs.

This can lead to right-sided heart failure and even death within five to seven years of people being diagnosed.

In the UK it affects 6,500 people, according to the British Heart Foundation.

Current treatments target the pulmonary vessels, rather than heart dysfunction.

However, researchers have found beta blockers may be more effective.

They cause the heart to beat more slowly with less force and stress.

“There is a critical need for new therapies to support right ventricular function in pulmonary hypertension," said Serpil C Erzurum, lead study author from the Cleveland Clinic.

“While treatments with beta blockers such as carvedilol are standard therapy in patients with left-sided heart failure, successful therapies in right-sided heart failure and PAH have lagged behind. 

“Longer-term studies are needed but our initial analysis shows that carvedilol may also benefit patients with PAH, who currently have few available treatment options."

In the study, researchers looked at a group of 30 patients with PAH.

They found that beta blockers lowered heart rate, improved heart rate recovery from exercise, and did not worsen heart failure or lead to airflow deterioration. 

Previously there had been concerns that beta blockers may decrease functional lung capacity.

"There is good reason to consider beta blockers for the right ventricular failure in PAH," said W.H. Wilson Tang, study co-author from the Cleveland Clinic. 

"The fact that beta blockers were well-tolerated and effective in lowering heart rates thereby improving the heart efficiency is unto itself a key observation, since doctors have been cautioned against using them in this setting for safety concerns. 

“This study provides important new data that advances our knowledge of using this class of drugs in this chronic and life-threatening lung-associated vascular disease."

High blood pressure warning: Leaving THIS common problem untreated risks heart disease

Research has shown that untreated obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) can increase blood pressure.

A study published in the The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that the sleep condition raises metabolic and cardiovascular stress.

It is a common disorder where the walls of the throat relax and narrow during sleep, interrupting normal breathing. 

Scientists discovered that even if OSA is left untreated for just a few days it can can elevate blood sugar and fat levels, stress hormones and blood pressure.

"This is one of the first studies to show real-time effects of OSA on metabolism during the night," said Jonathan Jun, senior study author and assistant professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Research published in the American Journal of Epidemiology and Lancet Respiratory Medicine revealed that it affects 20 to 30 per cent of adults.

It can have a big impact on quality of life as well as raising risk of certain conditions, according to the NHS.

These include diabetes and heart disease.

In the study, researchers looked at 31 patients who had OSA with an average age of 50.8 and average BMI that indicated obesity.

Obesity is a common characteristic of those with the sleep condition.

The study authors found an association between OSA and elevated heart rate, reduced blood oxygen, as well as increased levels of free fatty acids, glucose, cortisol and blood pressure.

Without continuous positive airway pressure - which normal sleepers have - blood pressure is likely to increase, risking cardiovascular disease.

The study authors say the research provides further evidence that OSA is not a side-effect of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, but can directly aggravate these conditions.

According to the NHS, symptoms of OSA include loud snoring, noisy and laboured breathing and repeated short periods where breathing is interrupted by gasping or snorting.

Additionally, some people may experience night sweats.

Sufferers are often unaware they have a problem, but can feel very tired during the day.

Dementia news: Reason behind contagious yawning could help treat patients

Contagious yawning is triggered involuntarily when we observe another person yawn.

But our ability to resist when someone near us starts yawning is limited, and our urge to yawn actually increases if we are instructed to resist yawning.

However no matter how hard we try to stop, it might change how we yawn - but it won't alter our propensity to yawn.

Nottingham University researchers explained the contagious yawn was triggered automatically by primitive reflexes in the primary motor cortex, the area of the brain responsible for motor function.

It is a common form of echophenomena, which is the automatic imitation of someone else's words, known as echolalia, or actions called echopraxia. 

The researchers also found it is not just in humans involuntary yawning occurs as the behaviour has been seen in chimpanzees and dogs.

The study, published in the journal Current Biology, is part of broader research into the underlying biology of neuropsychiatric disorders and the search for new methods of treatment.

Professor Stephen Jackson, said: "We suggest that these findings may be particularly important in understanding further the association between motor excitability and the occurrence of echophenomena in a wide range of clinical conditions that have been linked to increased cortical excitability and/or decreased physiological inhibition such as epilepsy, dementia, autism, and Tourette syndrome."

For their research the team looked into the link between motor excitability and the neural basis for contagious yawning and used a transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).

They recruited 36 adults to help with their study, who viewed video clips showing someone else yawning and were instructed to either resist yawning or to allow themselves to yawn.

The participants were videoed throughout, and their yawns and stifled yawns were counted. 

In addition, the intensity of each participant's perceived urge to yawn was continuously recorded.

Scientists also found using electrical stimulation they were also able to increase the urge to yawn.

Professor Georgina Jackson form the Institute of Mental Health, said: "This research has shown that the 'urge' is increased by trying to stop yourself. 

"Using electrical stimulation we were able to increase excitability and in doing so increase the propensity for contagious yawning. 

"In Tourettes if we could reduce the excitability we might reduce the ticks and that's what we are working on."

The TMS results were able to predict contagious yawning and showed each individual's propensity for contagious yawning is determined by cortical excitability and physiological inhibition of the primary motor cortext.

Professor Jackson added: "If we can understand how alterations in cortical excitability give rise to neural disorders we can potentially reverse them. 

"We are looking for potential non-drug, personalised treatments, using TMS that might be affective in modulating inbalances in the brain networks.

High blood pressure diet: Five surprising foods PACKED with salt

Consuming too much salt is one of the major risk factors for high blood pressure.

Other causes include smoking and poor diet.

The NHS recommends you consume no more than 6g of salt per day.

However, according to Blood Pressure UK, most adults in the UK are eating 50 per cent more than they should.

Having elevated blood pressure puts you at risk of heart disease, kidney disease and vascular dementia.

Some salty tasting foods obviously contain a high amount of salt, but it can be hidden in a surprising number.

Cheese

The health pressure group Consensus Action on Salt and Health (CASH) found in 2012 that unnecessary amounts of salt were being added to cheese.

After analysing 722 cheese portions they found roquefort, a blue cheese, was the saltiest type at 1.06g per 30g.

Tomato ketchup

According to the British Heart Foundation, there is 0.3g of salt in just a teaspoon of ketchup.

They recommend making a salsa with chopped tomatoes, red onion, coriander, lime juice and optional chilli instead.

Sausages

A 2011 CASH survey of 300 sausages found many were very high in salt.

They discovered eating two sausages for breakfast could be half the daily maximum recommended salt intake.

Soy sauce

One tablespoon of soy sauce contains nearly half the daily maximum recommended salt intake.

Soup

In 2010 CASH revealed that 25 per cent of the 575 types of soup it analysed failed to meet Food Standards Agency targets on salt.

They recommended that a 100g portion of soup should contain no more than 0.6g of salt.

Endings and beginnings. It is that time of the year when we shift our focus to the natural cycle and rhythm of closing up another semester on campus. We are bidding students and employees farewell and good luck. For some of us, we are leaving behind colleagues and work that have had great meaning and impact on our lives. As of May 15th, 2017, I too, will be transitioning to a new role as senior advisor to the president until I retire on October 31st, 2017. My only regret is that there simply are not enough days in the year to recognize all of the superhero staff members in our Division.

The group was also exposed to a compilation of data by the Office of Strategic Planning & Resource Allocation in order to compare data already captured and measured by UND with the metrics the group is currently developing. The immediate purpose is to work  towards solidifying core values and metrics as they will become the building blocks of the Strategic Plan.

Holm, and Andrea Boe. BACKGROUND. Feedback from the broader campus community is an essential element to the Strategic Planning process. To this end, an Engagement Working Group (EWG) was formed from volunteers of the larger Strategic Planning Committee. The overall goal of the EWG is to identify, coordinate, and report on engagement opportunities with students, faculty and staff at critical points during the strategic planning process. The immediate role of the EWG is to solicit feedback from the campus community on the draft Core Values and draft Strategic Initiatives recently developed by the Strategic Committee. The feedback will be documented and presented at the October 26 Strategic Planning Committee meeting with the purpose of finalizing the Core Values and Strategic Initiatives. New Technologies that Enable Student Success - In the Know with Provost DiLorenzo

In a recent post, I briefly discussed a new truism in higher education – something our students implicitly know – that technology, when used appropriately, has great potential for enabling student success. Identifying, developing, deploying and institutionalizing the use of the correct technology is the challenge. Above all, it is important to recognize that technology is an enabling tool supporting new approaches to student success, not driving them. For several years, UND has been implementing new technologies that were chosen after careful evaluation and review of best practices across academia. Our early assessments indicate that these technologies have driven greater success for students who are striving to reach their ultimate goal of graduation.  From interventions for the student who needs extra help to stay on track, to "one-click" semester scheduling where students easily build timetables that fit with their many demands of class and life, these technologies are working. One of the first things you’ll probably notice is the updated signage around the library, thanks to one of our amazing student workers, Andrew. Each floor is now coded with a color and a symbol to help you more easily find your way around the library. In addition, the maps are oriented in the same direction that the viewer is already facing, which will make it much easier to know exactly which direction to turn when coming out of the stairwell or off the elevator when you’re trying to find a book or other item.

Saving Humpty Dumpty - ELLC Egg Drop. If only Humpty Dumpty had engineering students instead of all the king's horses and men. Last Saturday, students from CEM's Engineering Living Learning Community (ELLC) participated in the 2nd Annual ELLC Egg Drop Competition. Students placed eggs in protective constructions they built then threw them from the top of UND’s parking ramp. ELLC Faculty advisor and Assistant Professor Dr. Joel Ness calculated students’ scores based on adherence to the rules, if the vehicle fell within target zone, and creativity. Ness also awarded additional points to those who used engineering theory in their construction. After the competition, all competitors came down from the parking ramp to McVey Hall Director Abbey Lane who announced, "I have three prizes and bubble wrap for fourth place!" The winners were Kyle Scott in first place, Hannah Gombold in second, Josh Hoernemann in third, and Bridget Heiland in fourth.
