High blood pressure diet: Add THESE foods to your shopping list to lower it

One of the causes of high blood pressure is a poor diet - but changing the foods you eat could also help relieve it. 

Salty foods, for example, can cause your body to retain fluid, which increases blood pressure, according to the Mayo Clinic.

It is thought excess salt intake is one of the main factors in the rise of young people suffering from high blood pressure.

In the UK, it is recommended people consume no more than 6g of salt a day.

Other types of foods that, consumed in excess, can trigger hypertension include frozen pizza, pickles and canned soup.

Experts believe it can be more effective to change your diet rather than rely solely on medications, such as beta-blockers and ACE inhibitors.

This is because drugs don’t necessarily get to the bottom of the problem, and can sometimes have unwanted side-effects.

There are certain foods researchers have identified as helping lower blood pressure.

In a 2010 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine scientists made the following recommendations.

1. Eat more poultry, fish, nuts, and legumes, and less red meat.

2. Choose low-fat or zero-fat milk and other dairy products over full-fat versions.

3. Turn to vegetables and fruits instead of sugary or salty snacks and desserts.

4. Select breads, pasta, and other carbohydrate-rich foods that are made from whole grains and not highly refined white flour.

5. Eat fruit instead of drinking fruit juice.

6. Use unsaturated fats like olive oil instead of butter or coconut oil.

7. Enlist herbs, spices, vinegar, and other low-sodium flavourings instead of salt.

The researchers also recommended that sufferers avoid skipping meals and eat one-third of your daily calories at breakfast.

They also suggested keeping a note of everything you eat.

High blood pressure is a leading global killer responsible for 12 million deaths a year.

This is because it triggers heart attacks stroke, dementia and kidney disease.
