High blood pressure diet: Eat THIS trendy 85p food to reduce risk of hypertension

High blood pressure affects one in four people in the UK, according to Public Health England.

A diet high in salt is a major risk factor, but certain foods can also help lower your pressure and reduce risk of hypertension.

This includes avocados - a fruit that has soared in popularity in recent years, can reduce risk of heart attack and which comes packed with potassium.

Potassium is a nutrient that has previously been found to lower blood pressure.

Other foods containing potassium include bananas, potatoes and dates.

However, it’s not just the potassium content of avocados that provide it with blood pressure-lowering benefits.

It also contains lots of healthy monounsaturated fats.

Research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that replacing saturated fats - found in many animal products like dairy and red meat - with monounsaturated fats may help lower your blood pressure.

Additionally, avocados contain a high amount of fibre.

This falls into insoluble fibre - which helps your digestive tract function efficiently - and soluble fibre which boosts cardiovascular health by reducing cholesterol.

A cup - roughly 227g - of avocado provides a considerable 9.8g of fibre.

However, beware their high calorie content - particularly since being overweight is a high blood pressure risk factor.

One half of an avocado could contain up to 200 calories.

It is thought that up to seven million people in the UK have high blood pressure but don’t yet realise it.

High blood pressure can often be hidden for a long time since there aren’t always obvious symptoms.

However, when they do appear signs include headache, fatigue, irregular heartbeat, difficulty breathing and chest pain.
