Pain in back? Try THESE six exercise moves at home to ease discomfort

Back pain is a major problem in the UK, costing the country almost £1billion a year in absences from work.

Discomfort in the lower back is particularly common, according to the NHS.

While there are thought to be around 2.5 million sufferers, there remain many misconceptions about how best to ease it.

New research by the British Chiropractic Association (BCA) discovered that half of people incorrectly believe that you should always rest a bad back.

Other common myths surrounding back pain included that it was an inevitable part of ageing, and that painkillers alone could cure it.

Rishi Loatey, BCA chiropractor explained: “If people don’t know enough about what causes back pain or how best to treat it they could not only delay their recovery but potentially aggravate their problem. 

"Eighty per cent of people will suffer from back pain at some point in their lives so it’s really concerning that so many people still don’t know enough about the best way to look after your back.”

The BCA has revealed that drinking enough water is one of the best things you can do to tackle discomfort.

This is because dehydration can exacerbate back or neck problems.

Doing moderate activity can also be very beneficial for back pain.

According to research by the BCA published earlier this year, 41 per cent of people have been put off exercising due to back or neck pain.

However, experts say strengthening the core could ward off back pain for good.

"A lot of back pain is due to postural alignment problems, and if you catch it soon enough and correct the problem with exercise and strengthening, you can avoid future pain," said Emma Cranfield, senior physiotherapist at Ramsay Healthcare UK.

"By doing gentle exercises that engage your core muscles you are building a core muscle foundation.

"I would recommend undertaking three 20-minute sessions a week to see the best results, whatever your age."
