Aussie flu symptoms: FIVE natural ways to relieve cold and flu signs

Aussie flu has swept across the UK, and has subsequently been spotted in the US.

About 500 people have been hospitalised by the deadly viral infection since the beginning of October.

Signs of the condition include muscle aches, fatigue, fever and diarrhoea.

But, these five natural treatments could help to relieve some symptoms, it’s been claimed.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps to boost the immune system, according to nutritionist Dr Josh Axe.

Fruit and vegetables could provide you with an added boost of the vitamin, he said.

“Take 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C daily to ward off a cold or the flu,” said Axe, “and up to 4,000 milligrams daily when you are experiencing symptoms.”

Vitamin D

Low levels of vitamin D has been linked to higher rates of cold, flu and respiratory infections, research has revealed.

Public Health England has been advised to take 10 microgram daily supplements of vitamin D during the autumn and winter months, when sunlight is limited.

The vitamin helps to regulate the immune system, and 2,000 International Units (IU) could help to treat colds or flu, Axe said.

“Zinc supports immune function and has an antiviral effect. It works best when taken at the first sign of illness,” said the nutritionist.

“Zinc may lessen the symptoms of the cold virus but excessive amounts aren’t good for you. Zinc pills and sprays do not seem to be effective.”

Between 50 and 100 milligrams of zinc a day could help to prevent cold or flu symptoms.

Brewer’s Yeast

Brewer’s yeast has been used in baking and winemaking.

It contains B vitamins, chromium and protein, and helps intestinal enzymes to relieve flu symptoms.

“Brewer’s yeast stimulates intestinal enzymes to help relieve diarrhoea, fights bacteria in the intestines and improves immune response to viruses that infect the lungs,” said Axe.

“Research has found that Brewer’s yeast reduces the risk of getting a cold or the flu and helps symptoms dissipate more quickly.”

Drinking honey in tea with lemon could ease sore throat pain, and research has revealed it acts as a cough suppressant.

Giving children 10 grams of honey to children before bed can help to relieve cough symptoms, scientists have revealed.

But, you shouldn’t give honey to children younger than one years old, as it can contain botulinum spores.
