Best supplements: Arthritis joint pain eased with these 24p a day capsules

Arthritis pain affects about 10 million people in the UK, according to the NHS.

The condition can cause joint pain, fevers, inflammation and stiffness.

But, taking Indian frankincense supplements - otherwise known as Boswellia serrata - could help to relieve symptoms, studies have claimed.

The supplements could help to prevent cartilage loss, and even inhibit the autoimmune process in rheumatoid arthritis patients, according to the Arthritis Foundation.

“Indian frankincense could reduce inflammation and treat rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and bursitis symptoms,” said the Arthritis Foundation.

“It may also be used to treat symptoms of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.

“Boswellic acids – the active components – may have strong anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.

“They may also help prevent cartilage loss and inhibit the autoimmune process, making Indian frankincense/boswellia a potential therapy for rheumatoid arthritis, in addition to osteoarthritis.”

Try taking between 300mg and 400mg of Boswellia serrata a day, said the Arthritis Foundation.

“Look for products with 60 per cent boswellic acids - the active ingredient.”

The supplement is safe to use in a daily dose, but high doses could have serious effects on the liver.

Other supplements for arthritis include glucosamine sulphate and chondroitin.

You should also watch out for selenium deficiency - a relatively common condition. Not getting enough selenium could cause arthritis to progress more quickly, said Arthritis Research UK.

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis in the UK, affecting about eight million people.

Those most at risk of the condition are adults in their late 40s, and people with a family history of osteoarthritis.

It’s caused by a gradual wearing down of the smooth cartilage lining of joints.

Once the cartilage roughens and thins out, it can make movement more difficult, causing pain and stiffness.
