Turmeric is old news in Asia - people have been reaping the benefits of this spice for thousands of years. 

But now the rest of the world is realising how much the spice can help improve our everyday and wellbeing. 

Researchers have been testing the effects of turmeric on everything from achy joints to blood sugar management and have found promising results. 

So what are the health benefits of turmeric? Holland & Barrett have outlined some of the root’s benefits and some ways to incorporate it in your diet. 

Health benefits 

The health food shop says among its benefits it has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and wound-healing properties. 

It is as effective as some anti-inflammatory drugs for people who suffer from IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), Crohn’s disease and arthritis. 

It can also sooth sprains, settle upset stomachs, stop diarrhoea and reduce bloating. 

Teeth whitening 

When making homemade toothpaste, turmeric can be added as it’s a natural tooth whitener and it’s also good for reducing toothache and sensitivity. 

Some people choose to add it to they moisturises as it can leave skin looking vibrant, help clear up acne and reduce the prominent of dark circles and stretch marks. 

Gets rid of dandruff 

Massaging a paste made from turmeric and coconut oil or milk onto the scalp and leaving it for an hour or two before washing it off can rejuvenate dry skin and reduce the number of flakes considerably. 

So what are some ways to add turmeric into your daily lifestyle?

Simmer milky tea with a pinch of turmeric and a little honey 

Unlike a regular latte, you don’t need any coffee to create this natural energy booster. Gently warm a cup of almond or coconut milk. Whisk in half a teaspoon of turmeric, plus some powdered ginger and cinnamon with a teaspoon of coconut oil. 

Blend into a smoothie 

Try blending a handful of ice, frozen spinach chunks, frozen berries, almond milk, a banana, with half a teaspoon of turmeric.

Whisk into scrambled eggs or tofu 

Stir the powder eggs or tofu, dust over the top of poached eggs, or add to omelettes. The mild earthy taste is an ideal partner. 

Stir into your leafy greens 

Bump up your leafy green veg’s nutritional profile even more by stirring a teaspoon of turmeric powder into the dish of steaming hot greens just before serving. 

Sprinkle on avocado

This delicious snack is full of fibre, which means it can keep you feeling fuller for longer. Eat it on its own or mash it with salt and black pepper and enjoy on crackers.
