Cough symptoms? FIVE natural ways to get rid of a dry or chesty cough

Most coughs go away by themselves within three weeks, and there’s not usually any reason to see a GP, according to the NHS.

Coughs are completely normal, and help the body to get rid of harmful micro-organisms or dust.

Speak to a pharmacist if you have a cough. They can advise you on some over-the-counter medicines or lozenges.

But, you should always see a GP if you have a hacking cough, chest pain, or if you’ve had the cough for more than three weeks.

You may be able to get rid of a cough naturally with these home remedies.


Drinking hot lemon with honey could help to relieve a cough, according to the NHS.

“Hot lemon with honey has a similar effect as cough medicines,” it said.

The best way to treat a cough is to squeeze half a lemon into a mug of boiled water.

Add in one or two teaspoons of honey, and drink the mixture while it’s still warm.

But, hot lemon with honey shouldn’t be given to babies, the NHS warned.


Pineapples contain the enzyme bromelain, which may help to suppress coughs and loosen mucus in the throat, a study revealed.

A mixture of pineapple juice, honey, salt and pepper could reduce coughing up to five times faster than some over-the-counter medicines, it claimed.

Medical website Healthline said: “To enjoy the most benefits of pineapple and bromelain, eat a slice of pineapple or drink 3.5 ounces [100ml] of fresh pineapple juice three times a day.”


Essence of thyme could be mixed with ivy to help relieve coughing symptoms, a study claimed.

Thyme leaves contain compounds called flavonoids, which ac as a natural anti-inflammatory, Healthline said.

“The leaves relax the throat muscles involved in coughing.

“You can make thyme tea at home using 2 teaspoons of crushed thyme leaves and 1 cup of boiling water. Cover the cup, steep for 10 minutes, and strain.”


The menthol in peppermint helps to soothe the throat and break down mucus.

Patients could benefit from inhaling peppermint vapour or by drinking peppermint tea.

Peppermint oil may also help to ease coughing symptoms, according to nutritionist Dr Josh Axe.

“Inhaling diffused peppermint oil can oftentimes immediately unclog your sinuses and offer relief to scratchy throats,” he said.

“Peppermint acts as an expectorant and may provide relief for colds, cough, sinusitis, asthma, and bronchitis.”


Liquorice root could be used to treat a sore throat or cough, as it’s a powerful expectorant.

It loosens and expels mucus form the throat, while also containing antiviral and antimicrobial properties, it’s been claimed.

Use extracts of liquorice in cough drops, syrups or teas for the best effect.
