Rosacea treatment: This Morning’s Dr Sara reveals you can reduce redness with this cream

Rosacea is where certain facial blood vessels enlarge, giving the cheeks and nose a flashed appearance.

During the Second Opinion segment of This Morning, one caller spoke about her issue with the condition and asked Dr Sara what she recommends for treatment for reducing redness.

According to the TV medic, brimonidine gel is best for this.

Brimonidine gel has been found in clinical studies to significantly diminish facial redness of rosacea.

Dr Sara said: “Put brimonidine on 30 minutes before you go out and it will significantly reduce redness. It lasts for around 12 hours.

“Other treatments include oral tablets such as beta blockers.

“For spots and pimples you can use gels such as metronidazole.”

The NHS lists the following symptoms to look for:

  • Flushing
  • Persistent facial redness
  • Visible blood vessels
  • Papules and pustules
  • Thickened skin

Other symptoms include:

  • Sensitive skin - burning, itching, stinging and pain
  • Dry, rough skin
  • Raised red patches (plaques) on your skin
  • Facial swelling (lymphedema)

It’s unknown what the cause of rosacea is but some potential factors have been suggested.

Blood vessel abnormalities in the blood vessels of the face maybe contribute to flushing.

Research has shown triggers such as ultraviolet (UV) light, spicy food, alcohol, exercise, stress, head and cold can cause peptides.

Microscopic mites - known as demodex folliculorum, these mites usually live on human skin and are harmless. But people with rosacea may have particularly large numbers that can spark symptoms.

Other ways to treat rosacea

Bupa says there are plenty of things you can do yourself at home to combat symptoms.

These include:

  • Use a daily gently redness-reducing cleanser
  • Avoid perfumed soap and alcohol-based products
  • Blot your face dry or let it dry naturally Use a sun block with an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 30 and wear a hat on sunny days
  • Moisturise with an anti-redness moisturiser
  • Avoid alcohol, stimulants such as caffeine and spicy foods, all of which can trigger rosacea
  • Camouflage the skin with green-tinted make-up
